Ian Little: You mentioned that in your veteran groups and your reunions, you shy away from the harder, bad times, and talk about the good times, what were some of those good times for you in Vietnam?
Ed Stewart: The good times? Well, we had some people there that had some talent with guitars and singing, some of the singing wasn’t the best, but it sounded pretty good over there. And we had a lot of guys that liked to play cards. They would do this in the evening and-a lot. I never heard it said, but-most of us thought they was going to run out of beer and we wanted to get our share. And consequently, we normally got more than our share.
Our 1st SGT could go trade something that we didn’t need for a truck load of beer. And we would have beer when nobody else has it. And he would actually bring out some beer to us while we were on operation. I never will forget when they brought one of those water wagons out that had drinkable water and they dropped it in on a hill and just as soon as they dropped it, they didn’t secure it ,and it rolled back over the hill and all the water went everywhere. Well here comes our 1st SGT and he said, I just seen that happen. And he said, don’t worry so much, we got beer. and he brought us in quite a bit of beer.
I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it in life, but I could have done without some of it. And the friendship we have acquired, it's just so permanent.
